As part of the ASEAN Month 2025 celebration, Mapúa Malayan Colleges Laguna’s (Mapúa MCL) Office for Strategic Partnerships and Global Engagement (OSPGE) opened the ASEAN Lecture Series with its first session on August 27, 2025.

The session featured Dr. Elizabeth M. Nuncio, an esteemed faculty member of the College of Arts and Science, who delivered a thought-provoking lecture titled “The Strategists of Herstory: Threads of Power and Purpose Among Asia’s Women Leaders.”

Dr. Nuncio delivered a lecture that highlighted the often-overlooked roles of women leaders in shaping Asia’s social, political, and cultural landscapes. She emphasized that while history books and mainstream accounts frequently downplay their presence, women have long been at the forefront of nation-building, peacekeeping, and social advancement. By revisiting these narratives, the lecture challenged audiences to expand their understanding of leadership and recognize the influence of women whose contributions have deeply shaped societies across the region.

Through historical examples, Dr. Nuncio illustrated how women led with resilience, vision, and purpose. From community builders to diplomatic strategists, these leaders demonstrated that influence is not confined to titles or official authority. Instead, their leadership often took place through informal channels, guiding communities, shaping decisions, and sustaining movements for progress. Despite operating within systems that were rarely designed for them, these women left enduring legacies that continue to inspire and resonate today.

The lecture also underscored how cultural expectations, and societal norms limited the visibility of women in leadership. Many had to work behind the scenes, negotiate spaces that excluded them, or exercise authority in subtle yet effective ways. Dr. Nuncio explained that this invisibility has distorted traditional notions of leadership, creating historical gaps that diminish the role of women in collective memory. Yet these silences, she argued, should not be mistaken for absence but rather as a call to rethink whose stories are told and valued in history.

By weaving together historical narratives with critical reflection, Dr. Nuncio invited the audience to see leadership as a practice that extends beyond positions of power to acts of courage, strategy, and service. Her lecture served as both a reminder and a call to action: to honor the women who shaped Asia’s past, to challenge existing narratives, and to build a future of leadership that values inclusivity and sustainability, ideals central to the celebration of ASEAN Month.

The event was not only a celebration of ASEAN Month but also a meaningful platform to promote values aligned with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, SDG 5: Gender Equality, and SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. By highlighting the narratives of women leaders, the lecture underscored the importance of inclusive education, equitable representation, and strong governance rooted in justice and empowerment.
