B.S. Biology students visit the International Rice Research Institute Gene Bank

On July 4, 2025, Mapúa Malayan Colleges Laguna (Mapúa MCL) B.S. Biology students enrolled in the C-BIO116 Genetics course visited the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) Gene Bank, which holds the world’s largest collection of rice genetic diversity.

During their visit, they observed cultivated rice species, wild relatives, and species from related genera. The students gained an understanding of the importance of developing rice varieties that can help mitigate the impacts of climate change.

They also had the opportunity to visit IRRI’s Tissue Culture Laboratory and wild rice glass house, where they learned about advanced techniques used in rice propagation and breeding.

Additionally, the students visited the Parasitology Collection Center and the Jose A. Solis Museum of Veterinary Medicine, both located at the UPLB College of Veterinary Medicine. There, they explored various parasites, mounted animal skeletons, stuffed birds, and other anatomical specimens.

This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 13: Climate Action, and SDG 15: Life on Land.
