The Path to Democracy: Ma'am Imelda Cariño Explores Democratization in Southeast Asia in ASEAN Lecture on SDG 16.

As part of the ongoing celebration of the 57th Founding Anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), last September 18, 2024, Mapúa Malayan Colleges Laguna’s (Mapúa MCL) Office for External Relations and Global Linkages (OERGL) hosted another installment of the ASEAN Lecture Series. In support of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, Ms. Imelda Cariño from the Faculty of the College of Arts and Science (CAS) delivered a thought-provoking lecture on the Democratization of Southeast Asia.

Ma’am Cariño began by providing an overview of the various systems of government across Southeast Asia, explaining how different political structures function and how they compare to one another. From this foundation, she transitioned into an exploration of the challenges that democratization faces in the region. Through a series of scenarios and videos, she illustrated the real and potential threats to democratic development, including authoritarianism, corruption, economic inequality, ethnic and religious tensions, and other external influences.

While acknowledging these threats, Ma’am Cariño also focused on the pathways to achieving democratization’s full potential in Southeast Asia. She emphasized the need for strong institutions and called for international cooperation to support democratic progress. Her lecture highlighted the importance of an inclusive political environment, urging Southeast Asian countries to continue their journey toward more equitable, just, and prosperous societies.

After her lecture, Ma’am Cariño opened the floor to a lively question-and-answer session, where students posed insightful questions about the future of democracy in the country. Ma’am Cariño addressed each question with enthusiasm, further enriching the discussion.

To formally close the session, Ms. Pearl Stephanie Ulep, Director of the Office for Strategic Partnerships and Global Engagements (OSPGE), presented Ma’am. Cariño with a certificate of recognition for her valuable contributions to the celebration of the 57th Founding Anniversary of ASEAN.
