With the combined efforts of Malayan Colleges Laguna’s (MCL) Center for Service-Learning and Community Engagement (CSCE) and the B.S. Accountancy (ACT) and B.S. Accounting Technology (ACTEC) programs under the E.T. Yuchengco College of Business (ETYCB), the Mabato-Azufre Paper Crafts Association (MAPCA) has successfully registered with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and applied for a grant last May 7, 2018.

Composed of 30 members, MAPCA is a group of parents from Pangil, Laguna, one of MCL’s partner communities, that makes papier-mâché (paper craft) products or “pagtataka” for their source of income.

Headed by Prof. Rizalina B. Ong, program chair for both ACT and ACTEC, and Prof. Jose Enrique J. Abaya, students from the two college programs started helping the Association by conducting a series of trainings and workshops on financial literacy, product costing, bookkeeping, and other related topics. They also assisted in drafting MAPCA’s constitution, by-laws, and other necessary documents.

“Helping them is just the beginning. Knowing that somehow we contributed something to make other people’s lives better is always a good feeling. We all need to do our part, no matter how little, to make this a better world,” Prof. Ong stated.

While DOLE’s grant to the Association is currently being processed, MAPCA has now become Artisan MNL’s official supplier of arts and crafts products.
