CGC raises awareness on mental health through “Mind Matters”

Dr. Sheila Marie G. Hocson, President of the Philippine Guidance and Counseling Association (PGCA), was present at MCL last February 20 for “Mind Matters,” a seminar organized by the Center for Guidance and Counseling (CGC).

To strengthen mental health awareness within the institution, Malayan Colleges Laguna’s (MCL) Center for Guidance and Counseling (CGC) organized a seminar titled “Mind Matters” on February 20, 2018.

“We at CGC believe that education is a powerful tool to cope with mental health issues,” CGC Head Ms. Mabeth B. Francia mentioned on this matter. “Students are quite aware of the problem and yet there are misconceptions on how to recognize and handle it.”

Dr. Hocson entertained questions from students afterwards.

Educating the audience about mental health was the President of the Philippine Guidance and Counseling Association (PGCA) Dr. Sheila Marie G. Hocson. She explained that mental health is associated with the holistic – physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and psychological – being of a person.

She stated that studying, attending seminars, honing talents, developing new skills, and nourishing ones’ experiences can help develop a good mindset, for “it is a prerequisite to a healthy mind.”

“If you are depressed, talk to someone you trust, such as your friends of good influence, guidance counselors, or your parents,” advised Dr. Hocson.

In general, Dr. Hocson encouraged the students to be the “light” to the people around them, being sensitive, kind, and caring regardless of their conditions, having empathy, and respecting individual differences.

“You matter. Everyone else matters.”
